Early Childhood Learning
What is it about
Early childhood learning is a branch of education theory that relates to teaching of children from birth up to the age of eight. Traditionally, this is up to the equivalent of third grade.
How important is it
It is more than preparation for primary school. It aims at the holistic development of a child’s social, emotional, cognitive and physical needs in order to build a solid and broad foundation for lifelong learning and wellbeing.
What is the situation in Ghana
Currently, the education policy of Ghana provides children two years of free and compulsory kindergarten in an attempt to ensure that young children are enrolled into school for early learning. This places Ghana ahead of the curve compared to other countries in Sub-Saharan Africa.
