Global Health Research Internship Program - 2022


The Center for Learning and Childhood Development-Ghana(CLCD) is a non-profit, research organization that seeks to end neonatal deaths and promote early childhood development. The Center's program areas are newborn and child health, developmental delays and disabilities, and early childhood education.

The Center's Global Health Research Internship Program provides students with real-life, hands on experience in research practice and intervention development to benefit mothers and children in a low-income country. The program has four main components: 1) Participation in a research project or community service project, 2) mentoring from leading researchers and service providers, 3) Training to enhance professional development, and 4) Facilitating student engagement in Ghanaian culture through visits to heritage sites.

ELIGIBILITY

This program provides summer research internships for all graduate and undergraduate students aged 18 years and above. To participate in the program, students are required to complete CITI Training online.

Antonella Selboja

Antonella Selboja is a junior studying Health Sciences with a concentration in pre-professional studies at Oakland University in Michigan. She is from Italy, where she was originally studying International Economics and Business. She has a good grasp of Latin and is fluent in five more languages. The love for dental medicine was worth much more pursuing and interesting to her than any other profession. Her passion for the health profession started when she started working as a dental assistant at a dental office in Florence, Italy. She moved to the United States at the age of 16 and was still persistent in following dental medicine. She plans to apply to NYU College of Dentistry, specifically on studying Pediatric and Orthodontic Dentistry. 


Elijah Olsen

Elijah Olsen is currently enrolled in the Master of Public Health program at Oakland University. He recently completed his undergraduate degree from the School of Health Sciences, Oakland University, and graduated from the Honors College; he is also looking forward to leading the Public Health Professionals organization on campus as its president in the fall. Growing up in Michigan as a son of two school teachers, Elijah developed a love for learning and knowledge at a young age. During his undergraduate years, he felt a growing compassion for overlooked and marginalized people, particularly those struggling from chronic diseases and inadequate knowledge about their own health. He works as a research assistant to Dr. Kwame Sakyi, investigating childhood development and maternal health in hopes of helping families in need. His passionate about empowering others to live safer, healthier lives through health education and equity, and takes great joy in its pursuit.


Jocelyn Wylie

Jocelyn Wylie is a junior studying Health Sciences at Oakland University. She graduated from Michigan Math and Science Academy as the valedictorian of her high school class. Jocelyn is a member of both the Pre-Medical Society and the Undergraduate Research Society at her school. She is deeply involved in community outreach and event planning at her church, Kingdom Apostolic Ministries where she helps to serve on the hospitality and production ministries and is a prominent member on the youth board and the youth praise team. Jocelyn is also the cofounder of Jewels of Faith, a mentorship program for young ladies at her church. She has a strong passion for service and caring for others and hopes to carry these attributes with her on her journey to pursue medicine at Michigan State College of Human Medicine where she will become a physician.


Makenna

Makenna is a junior studying Health Sciences at Oakland University. She is originally from Westphalia, Michigan where she graduated from Pewamo-Westphalia High School. Makenna is involved in Club Volleyball, The Pre-Medical Society, and Delight Ministries at Oakland University. She is also part of the Honors College. Makenna works at Portland Assisted Living and Memory Center as a Nurse Aide. After getting an undergraduate degree, Makenna hopes to go to medical school.


Dea Arrsi

Dea Arrsi is a junior studying Health Sciences with a concentration on Pre-Health Professionals at Oakland University. She is originally from Albania but moved to the United States when she was 18 and graduated at Utica High School in Utica, Michigan. At Oakland University she is part of the Italian Club, Spanish Club and also the Albanian American Students Association. She aspires to be a Physician Associate in the future and is very passionate about the Medical field. She currently works at Beaumont Health Hospital as a Nursing Assistant for 36 hours a week and also attends Oakland University as a full time student. After graduation, Dea hopes to work as a Physician Assistant in the Trauma or Emergency Department and be a great help to people in need of immediate assistance or serious health problems or injuries. Dea is also very determined to practice in different countries in the world and contribute more to poor countries in need of medical staff. Coming from a country where every medical service is free, another goal of hers after she has achieved her dream into becoming an experienced PA is to open her own practice with affordable prices for people who are unable to pay for insurance and free services for kids under 18, people with disabilities and free services for seniors.


Aida Pashaj

Aida Pashaj is a sophomore studying Health Sciences pre-med at Oakland University. She just transferred to Oakland University from Macomb Community College where she was studying general education. She currently works as an Emergency Technician at Beaumont Hospital in Troy Michigan.  She works around doctors and nurses and sees a lot of sick people. She loves that is able to help people who need her help and are not able to help themselves. 

Aida moved to United States four years ago August 2018 from Albania. She used to volunteer at pediatrics hospital every summer during her high school years, so she always knew she wanted to help people and be there for them when they need the most help.  This is a great opportunity for her, and she hopes to learn as much as she can and help any way possible. She knows the struggle of life and knows how to appreciate the small things.
